The National Honor Society

The National Honor Society is a nation-wide organization that recognizes students that have exceptional qualities and go above and beyond the responsibility they have. Students are inducted based on four criteria: Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service. A student must have a grade point average of 3.75 or above to be inducted. That student must also be a leader, and have a desire to help the society around him or her. Community service is also important to be inducted – the more the student does, the better the chances of being allowed into the Honor Society.
The Honor Society’s new advisers are Mrs. Selina Pewitt and Mrs. Michelle Robbins. They were asked to run it and accepted without delay. Mrs. Pewitt thought that it would be a great opportunity to work with students who were focused, reliable, and dependable. Mrs. Robbins wanted the chance to see what the students were like outside of a classroom environment. They both agree that the hardest part of running the society is finding times for meetings to be held. The students, because of their many great qualities, are diverse in what activities they enjoy; the meetings have to coexist with many different sports and clubs. However, this also teaches the students time management, an important skill in the real world.
There isn’t much changed from the ceremony or society itself with the new advisors. The only difference that is apparent is the addition of an honor teacher for the new inductees. They have to choose one person that they look up to, be it a teacher, a parent, or anyone else that has taught them about being honorable or any of the four pillars of the society. The rest of the ceremony is as it was; the inductees go to sign the book and receive their pins, then the candle lighting ceremony occurs at the very end. The end candles are lighted and they pass the flame from one to the next, symbolizing the passing of knowledge and how people affect others and their character.
