As you may or may not know, Spotswood High School’s drama club will be presenting Kiss Me Kate in March 2010.  This musical comedy is literally a play about a play, with some romance, drama, comedy, and action on the side to appeal any viewer. Kiss Me Kate will be showing March 16 at 7:30 for senior citizens. It will be open to the public Thursday, March 18, through Saturday, March 20, at 7:30 PM. Its final showing is a matinee on Sunday, March 21, at 2:00 PM.

The production of Kiss Me Kate requires three months of preparation and a great deal of hard work and effort from its cast and crew. The play is being led by Director Mrs. Mary Ann Cochran, Assistant Director Mrs. Barbara Plachinski, Choreographer Mrs. Joanne Carroll, Music Director Ms. Sarah Carino, Set Designer Mr. Christopher Slavicek, and Housemother Mrs. Rae Gagnon. With around 40 members, the cast of Kiss Me Kate is devoted to creating a performance that will wow its viewers.

Mrs. Mary Ann Cochran explains the difficulties of directing Kiss Me Kate: “The most challenging fact is that there are many components that must meld together: singing, acting, and dancing. Because people have different skills levels, it becomes difficult for everyone to learn at once, so the whole process is time consuming…An average practice, once all the songs and dances are learned, consists of blocking all of the scenes until the show is complete.” After being asked if this play will be as successful as were those of previous years, Director Mrs. Mary Ann Cochran proclaims, “Of course, hopefully it will be the most successful. The hope is always to do better each year.”

David McSpedon, who is cast as The Gangster, says that he is happy with Kiss Me Kate as his final show at Spotswood High School, declaring, “I am [happy with this play] because I am familiar with it. Also, I get to play a funny part with my best friend, John Chludzinski.” He puts “about 15 hours a week for about 3 months” into the production of this play.

Also cast in the play, Amanda Gangon advises new students to join the drama club next year. She states, “You have to be dedicated, but after all the hard work you put in, you have a great time.”

Kiss Me Kate is recommended for all viewers to see. If you are into romance, you will definitely enjoy this play. If you are into comedy, Kiss Me Kate will surely make you laugh. So, stop by Spotswood High School to see the show any day between March 18 and 21, and the cast will perform this energetic play to which it has dedicated itself.
